ACQ 2017 - A Player's thoughts

Just my thoughts as a player

Introduction

I won't post a tourney report that fast. I didn't perform well anyway. My loss can be attributed to a lack of sufficient playtesting and poor decisions during deck building.

WindWitch Spellbook True Draco performed poorly over the course of the event, with many players finding themselves at the bottom tables. To keep up with the competition and consistency of other decks, players included Pot of Desires in the deck. However, they soon found themselves unable to pull off the combo after the banish cost took its toll. Over the course of the event, I constantly saw this deck at the bottom tables, which was slightly disappointing since I thought it would perform pretty well.

Macro Cosmos is the main selling point of Demise True Draco. But the lack of Hand Traps in that specific deck build made it tough for them to compete with their counterparts. Even though one can manage to squeeze in and play around with Ash Blossom and Joyous Spring, suffering a negation from power plays and resource-regaining cards like Card of Demise will spell the end of Demise True Draco.

All decks also packed plenty of WindWitch and Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon hate. The Monarchs Stormforth was a trend that caught on here in Singapore. It, as a quick-play spell synergises with Dragonic Diagram so well that players started Main Decking it in copies of three, completing replacing Cosmic Cyclone.

Furthermore, Mind Control shone as well. Take monster and use it as a Link Material, or Synchro Summon with it. True King Dino decks love this play. Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King + Jurrac Aeolo = Chaofeng, Phantom of the Yang Zing. Otherwise, any True Draco/King deck can just destroy the stolen monster with Dragonic Diagram.

The widespread use of both Mind Control and The Monarchs Stormforth contributed to the fall of the popular WindWitch Spellbook True Draco deck.

Demise True Draco didn't perform badly due to this two cards. A larger contributing factor is the increasing number of players playing Harpie's Feather Duster in the Main Deck, even when they will most likely opt to go first. Evilswarm Exciton Knight is also a devastating monster that can punish a Demise True Draco deck.

Conclusion

GeoTheBacon managed to finish Top 16, making it for the cut after the 6-round Swiss but lost to his opponent in that round. The rest of us didn't perform that well. GeoTheBacon faced off with MyPochi is the third round, and won, contributing to MyPochi's 4-2 score. Despite achieving the same score as GeoTheBacon, that game served as a tiebreaker, denying MyPochi of a Top 16 spot.

K.Xavage, the member of the blog that you didn't know existed because he doesn't type, borrowed my True Draco cards after a 3-month hiatus. Naturally, misplays and forgetfulness left him with a poor score. As for me, like I mentioned, mistakes were made too.

I will do GeoTheBacon's Pure True Draco deck profile soon, along with a feature of my WindWitch Trickstar deck. So stay tuned.

Once again this is all just my 5cents and observations. We shall await Beyondtheduel and RoadOfTheKing for their metagame report and decklist reveal.

Thank you.
